Bermudians living in the UK will come together for a football tournament fundraiser in Coventry on Sunday [October 27] in support of Zhamir Denbrook-Pitt, who suffered life-changing injuries in a motorcycle crash.

The 20-year-old sustained a severe spinal injury in a collision in St David’s in July 2023. His family and friends are raising funds to support his ongoing rehabilitation, which includes a six-month trip overseas for specialised care.

Organised by Dennis Zuill, a former Dandy Town and Bermuda national team footballer, the Third Annual Zhamir Strong Football Classic will feature matches between Bermuda, Jamaica, Dunlop FC, and Leicester Lions at the Dunlop Sports and Social Club.

The event will also include a raffle, food stalls, and an afterparty.

“Every dollar we raise is important and will go towards Zhamir,” said Zuill, who now coaches Dunlop FC.

Zhamir’s grandmother, Arlene Simmons, said her grandson is making “remarkable strides” in his recovery and will attend the event with family and friends.

“Zhamir needs intensive rehabilitation and has qualified for a centre overseas,” she said. “We’re trying to raise as much funds as we can to get him there.

“Zhamir works so hard on his rehab and dilegently completes all the exercises prescribed by his occupational therapist at home. He’s making remarkable strides to get some of his mobility back.

“It’s amazing to see the Bermuda community rally behind him, as well as the local community. It’s humbling and amazing to see.

“Many of these people don’t know Zhamir, but they know his story and come out to fellowship with us. It’s overwhelming.

“Zhamir gets excited about the event. We’re so thankful people care and give their time to support him.

“We’re so grateful people love Zhamir and want to help him reach his goals.”
