Asphalt Plant Shipment Delayed For Review
The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advised that the “shipment of the new asphalt plant has been delayed by approximately three months to allow an independent assessment to be completed regarding the potential relocation of the Government Quarry’s operations.”
A Government spokesperson said, “Union partners and Ministry management met with Quarry staff to provide an update on this development and outline the next steps in the assessment process.
“The Ministry emphasised that despite this delay, the existing asphalt plant remains operational, and Bermuda’s road paving and maintenance programme will continue as scheduled.
“Since 2016, the owners of the adjoining Rosewood Hotel have expressed interest in the Government’s Quarry property as part of its plans to expand hospitality operations. The Government has reviewed and respectfully declined all previous offers for the site.
“Recently, the owners approached the Government requesting time to prepare one final proposal. The Government agreed only to permit an independent assessment to fully understand the cost and implications of relocating the Quarry’s operations. No negotiations have taken place, and no agreement has been reached.
“The Government has made clear that if any future proposal were determined to be in the best interest of Bermudians, the owners would be required to cover the full cost of relocating the Quarry’s operations and constructing modern, fit-for-purpose facilities.
“Many of the Quarry’s existing buildings are outdated or in poor condition, and addressing them will require significant investment.
“The Government will continue to ensure that all decisions protect the public interest and deliver value for the people of Bermuda.”

“The Government will continue to ensure that all decisions protect the public interest and deliver value for the people of Bermuda” by selling more of Bermuda to foreigners
The project is expected to be completed in three years, after which the OBA will no longer be operational.
Nor will our vehicles due to the state of the roads.
Pretty Large Potholes (PLP).
The oba is not operational right so what’s the difference? They change leaders every few years thinking it will make a difference election time. They might as well set the party on fire and change the name back.
What is it with you people and your obsession ? You automatically assume someone who posts something negative about the PLP are pro OBA . There are many of us out there that do not support either party .
“….and Bermuda’s road paving and maintenance programme will continue as scheduled.”
Is this a joke? Bermuda’s roads are a disgrace. A constant reminder of PLP failure.
Oh good grief! One excuse after another. The plant is already something like three years late on first promised delivery. What is the problem?
Don’t be surprised if this PLP Government is having a serious cashflow problem. Teachers not being paid. CCTV road cams years overdue. Bridge replacements many years overdue. Government House renos overdue. Traffic lights not fixed. Not forgetting the favourite, POTHOLES and comprehensive resurfacing of roads.
10 March 20024 “the construction of the plant abroad will take six months, followed by an additional three months for shipping and assembly on site. However, Astec Industries is collaborating with the Government to reduce this timeframe potentially if feasible.”
This simply can’t happen! Let’s hope the oba/UBP trots over there and joins the rest of their delightful circus of clowns in a island protest.
Glad I left the island in 1990.
What a farce.
