Bermuda Players Advance In CASA Individuals
Bermudian squash players Taylor Carrick and Micah Franklin each secured five-set victories in the day two evening session of the Caribbean Area Squash Association [CASA] Senior Championships, advancing in the men’s individual main draw.
Carrick delivered an upset by defeating the no. 2 seed, Julian Jervis of the British Virgin Islands, in a 52-minute match. Carrick came from behind twice after losing the first and third sets, winning 3-2. The final scores were 4-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, 11-3, earning Carrick a spot in the next round.
Franklin was involved in a longer contest, battling Darien Benn for 55 minutes. Franklin traded sets with Benn but prevailed 3-2 in a tight final set. The scores were 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 9-11, 13-11, ensuring Franklin also advanced in the men’s individual main draw.
In men’s individual main draw play earlier in the day, Carrick defeated Alex Stewart of Barbados 3-1 in a 40-minute match. Carrick dropped the first set 5-11 before rallying to win the next three sets 11-2, 11-8, 11-4.
Franklin also advanced with a straight-sets win, defeating Guyana’s Samuel Ince-Carvalhal 3-0 in 36 minutes, with scores of 11-7, 11-4, 11-7.
Other Bermudian men faced challenges from local Guyanese players. Anaya Smith was defeated 3-0 by Daniel Ince [11-6, 11-2, 11-4] in 26 minutes, and Noah Browne fell 3-0 to Guyana’s Jason-Ray Khalil [11-9, 11-3, 11-5] in 32 minutes.
In the men’s individual bracket 2 division, D’vario Thompson secured a 3-0 victory over Guyana’s Ethan Bulkan, winning 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 in 24 minutes.
On the women’s side, Abigail Brewer was defeated 3-0 by the no. 1 seed, Megan Best, with scores of 11-2, 11-0, 11-3.
In the women’s individual bracket 2 division, Alex Furtado split her two matches. She started with a 3-0 win over Andrea Tapiz [11-2, 11-1, 11-4] but then lost to Lara Conolly of the Cayman Islands, 3-1 [6-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-7].
