Bermuda Marks Human Rights Day
Bermuda marked Human Rights Day with the Human Rights Commission urging residents to reflect on the everyday essentials that uphold dignity, inclusion and equality.
A spokesperson said, “Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. The day marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that every person, no matter where they live, deserves dignity, safety, equity and opportunity.
“This year’s theme, “Our Everyday Essentials,” reminds us that human rights are the basic things people need every day to live well. Human rights are positive, essential and attainable.”
Executive Officer of the Human Rights Commission, Lisa Reed, said, “Human rights begin with each of us. They are shaped by the choices we make, how we treat each other and our shared commitment to a more just and humane world. When we act with intention in our daily lives, we help advance human rights.
“Human rights are not distant or abstract they are part of our daily experience. Human Rights allow us to take part in our communities, to express who we are and to know that our voices matter.”
A spokesperson added, “As Bermuda observes Human Rights Day, the Commission encourages all residents to:
- “Reflect on the essentials they need to feel safe, respected and included;
- “Consider how they can help others enjoy those same rights; and
- “Support fair laws, inclusive policies, practices and accessible and inclusive services.”
Ms. Reed concluded, “Human rights come to life when we stand up for one another. Each of us has a role to play in making sure everyone’s rights are protected.”
A spokesperson added, “The Human Rights Commission has a statutory remit to protect and promote human rights under the Human Rights Act, 1981. As the National Human Rights Institution for Bermuda, their mission is to protect and promote human rights through education, advocacy, collaboration and enforcement.
