St. George’s Releases December Newsletter
The Corporation of St. George’s has released its December newsletter, highlighting holiday lights, events, and celebrations welcoming families through New Year’s Eve.
A spokesperson said, “The oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the New World is lighting up for Christmas, extending an invitation to families scattered across England, America, the Caribbean, and beyond—we welcome you home for a Bermudian Christmas.”
“As we look ahead to the new year, may we carry with us a renewed sense of hope, peace, and togetherness,” says Mayor Quinell Francis. “Let us continue to support one another, celebrate our shared successes, and work hand in hand to build an even brighter future for our UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Town of St. George.”
The spokesperson said, “It’s the human moments that define St. George’s holiday season. This past August, newlyweds Tyson and Allison Flood chose the historic Towne Hall for their intimate elopement, drawn by its architecture and vibrant orange color. But what made their day unforgettable wasn’t the 400-year-old cedar trimmings—it was the community itself.”
“The town was alive with energy, and every person we passed poured so much love into us in the most magical way,” the couple reflected. “They’re memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime.”
The spokesperson said, “That same warmth now extends throughout December as the UNESCO World Heritage Site transforms into a living Christmas card where everyone can shop, dine, play and be entertained. The magnificent Towne Hall glows nightly through January 1st, while multi-colored lights adorn Ordnance Island and Hunter’s Wharf.
“The town that once sheltered Joseph Hayne Rainey in his barbershop before he returned to America to become the first Black member of the U.S. House of Representatives continues its tradition of welcoming people home. The English Sports Shop, operating from its distinctive pink building since 1960s, still dresses generations of Bermudians for life’s milestones—from first days of school to holiday attire and more.
“Major events include Santa’s arrival on December 13th at King’s Square [6-10 PM], featuring a selection of live local performances. Somers Garden becomes a Winter Wonderland [December 12-31] with movie nights and Santa visits. The celebration culminates New Year’s Eve with the town’s signature Onion Drop and drone light show [7 PM-1 AM].
“Yes, times have changed. But we have an occasion once a year to pause, connect, reminisce and share new stories.
