Local entertainer Tony Brannon is raising money for Dementia Bermuda by walking 1,200 miles.

Mr Brannon started the Walk for Dementia challenge on January 1 and has fewer than 40 miles remaining to complete his quest before the end of the year.

“I was in Barbados, and after the first month of walking 160 miles, I thought I could turn this into a fundraiser,” Mr Brannon told Bernews.

“The idea of doing 1,200 miles was a challenge – but one I knew I could do.”

Brannon, who has been playing songs on his guitar during musical therapy sessions for people with Alzheimer’s at the Peace Lutheran Church in Paget since 2013, has already raised $13,000 and hopes to reach $20,000 to $30,000 before the new year.

“To have $13,000 in the tank already is amazing,” he said.

“Many people have promised to donate, but only after I have completed the 1,200 miles!

“The walk has been mostly in Bermuda, but it has also included 50 miles in the UK and 30 miles in Toronto.”

There is a sliding scale for people who want to donate, ranging from one cent per mile to $1 per mile.

Mr Brannon, whose grandmother died from Dementia in 1979, said the money will go toward supporting the charity’s various programmes and services.

“Dementia puts a stress on families and caregivers – it’s a big deal,” he said.

“There aren’t many people I know who haven’t had a family member touched by this.”
