Local entertainer Tony Brannon has raised more than $16,000 for Dementia Bermuda after completing a 1,200-mile walking challenge.

Mr Brannon launched his “Walk for Dementia” on January 1 and finished on December 10.

“I’m really pleased with the amount I’ve raised,” Mr Brannon told Bernews. “The idea of doing 1,200 miles was a challenge – but one I knew I could do. It made me realise that when you’re serious about sticking to something, you can do it.”

Brannon, who has been performing musical therapy sessions for people with Alzheimer’s at the Peace Lutheran Church in Paget since 2013, began the walk while on a trip to Barbados. He also logged 50 miles in the UK and 30 miles in Toronto.

Donations were encouraged using a sliding scale, ranging from one cent per mile to $1 per mile.

Mr Brannon, whose grandmother died from dementia in 1979, said the funds will support the charity’s programmes and services.

“Dementia puts a stress on families and caregivers – it’s a big deal,” he said. “There aren’t many people I know who haven’t had a family member touched by this.”
