Community Urged To Support Zy-Asia Forbes
The Forbes family is asking the community for support as 22-year-old Zy-Asia Forbes, a new mother, recovers in Boston from severe leg injuries sustained in a cycling accident.
A spokesperson said, “The Forbes family is appealing to the Bermuda community for support following a devastating accident that has left 22-year-old Zy-Asia Forbes, a new mother, facing a long and uncertain medical recovery far from home.
“On December 4, 2025, Zy-Asia was involved in a serious accident at her family home while riding her bike to work. A patch of wet grass caused her to lose control, throwing her into the back of her grandfather’s parked car. She was not riding irresponsibly, yet the impact caused catastrophic injuries to her leg. Doctors determined that without immediate advanced medical care, Zy-Asia would lose her leg.
“Due to the severity of her injuries, Zy-Asia was airlifted on December 5 to Lahey Medical Center in Boston, where doctors quickly discovered the damage was far more extensive than initially expected. She sustained severe arterial, nerve, and ligament injuries, requiring an emergency vascular bypass using a vein from her other leg to restore blood flow. Her knee had no remaining ligaments and had to be stabilized with external rods and pins. She also underwent a life-saving fasciotomy to relieve pressure and prevent permanent damage.
“Despite multiple surgeries to manage her wounds, Zy-Asia developed a serious infection that forced doctors to reopen a surgically closed wound on December 10, delaying critical reconstructive procedures and prolonging her hospital stay.
“Zy-Asia is the loving mother of a 9-month-old baby boy and is currently separated from her child while she continues to fight for recovery in Boston. She is also a dedicated student at Bermuda College and was just months away from completing her Associate’s Degree and securing full-time employment with medical insurance when the accident occurred. At the time of the incident, she was uninsured, having previously been covered under her mother’s policy before her mother was made redundant earlier this year.
“Known for her gentle spirit, Zy-Asia has always felt called to work with children on the autism spectrum. Through her work with Tomorrow’s Voices, she found her purpose in caring for and supporting children with special needs.
“The financial burden has been overwhelming. Medical repayment costs are currently estimated at over $80,000, not including additional surgeries, rehabilitation, ongoing hospitalization, or living and travel expenses. The air ambulance alone cost $22,000.
“The Forbes family is asking the community for support to help cover Zy-Asia’s medical care, rehabilitation, and essential living expenses during this prolonged recovery.
