Sailing: SailGP Previews 2026 Racing Season
SailGP provided an overview of the upcoming season, which will include 13 teams and 13 events, including a race in Bermuda, and millions of dollars in prize money for the season.
A spokesperson said, “SailGP is back – and the 2026 Season promises to be faster and closer than ever. Whether you’re a long-time fan or discovering foiling for the first time, here’s your guide to what you can expect this season.
13 teams, 13 events – and every race matters
“The SailGP fleet has grown for 2026, with 13 teams representing the world’s best sailors. From established powerhouses like the Black Foils, the BONDS Flying Roos and Emirates GBR to exciting challengers like Artemis SailGP and Red Bull Italy aiming to make their mark, the teams are closer in skill and speed than ever before. Expect races to be even tighter, with mere seconds deciding the winner.
The world’s fastest sailboats
“The teams race identical F50 catamarans which fly above the water on hydrofoils, allowing them to unlock blistering speeds of more than 100 km/h. Danish outfit ROCKWOOL Racing set a new speed record in 2025 hitting an incredible 103.94 km/h – the fastest any sailboat has ever gone during racing. Will we see the record tumble again in 2026?
Rivalries, old and new
“Everyone loves a sporting rivalry, and SailGP is jam-packed with them. From historic clashes between titan teams to fresh showdowns on the water, every race sparks fierce competition. Whether it’s a battle for the podium or for pride, these rivalries fuel the drama, intensity and thrill that make SailGP unmissable.
Line-up changes and rising stars
“The 2026 Season brings fresh faces and shifting crew line-ups. Some teams are strengthening their tactics with new talent while others are doubling down on experience. These changes mean unpredictable outcomes and more head-to-head battles across the fleet, making each event a must-watch.
Fast and furious format
“SailGP races are short, sharp and spectacular. For the first time ever, 13 F50s will go head-to-head on the same course over a series of races, and the three top teams then face-off in a winner-takes-all showdown for Grand Prix glory. Jeopardy is high, excitement is off the charts – and in SailGP, anything can happen.
Global calendar, iconic destinations
“The 13-event calendar spans iconic sailing destinations, delivering high-octane racing on some of the world’s most spectacular waters. The 2026 Season sees the return of fan-favourites like Auckland, Portsmouth and New York, while also welcoming exciting new venues such as Perth and Rio de Janeiro to the fold. Sailing’s biggest prize pot
“A huge USD $12.8 million is up for grabs in 2026 – the biggest prize purse ever seen in sailing. The winner of each of the 13 Grand Prixs takes home $400,000, with $260,000 for second and $140,000 for third. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins $400,000, while the team crowned Rolex SailGP Champion at the end of the season wins a massive USD $2 million.
Why 2026 matters
“This season isn’t just about speed – it’s about mastery, rivalry, the return of some big names and the rise of the next generation of sailing stars. For newcomers, it’s your ultimate introduction to foiling and adrenaline-fueled racing. For longtime fans, it’s the latest chapter in a story of innovation, drama and history in the making.”
