‘Sea Of Blue Day’ To Help Promote Road Safety

January 12, 2026 | 3 Comments

PainIntoPurpose Bermuda, in collaboration with the Kijani Burgess Dream Award Charity #1023, will host the annual Sea of Blue Day on Friday [Jan 16] and invites the “entire community, schools, businesses and organizations to stand in solidarity with families affected by road traffic accidents and to promote road safety and wellness awareness across Bermuda.”

A spokesperson said, “Between January 2020 and the present, 66 people have lost their lives on Bermuda’s roads. Each loss represents not just a statistic, but a person, a family, and a community forever changed. Sea of Blue Day was created to honour those lives, support grieving families, and reinforce the urgent need for improved road safety and wellness awareness.

“The 2026 theme, “Everyone’s Life Matters on Our Roads,” emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users—drivers, riders, cyclists, pedestrians—and the Government entities responsible for road infrastructure and safety standards.

“PainIntoPurpose Bermuda encourages all road users to reflect on their personal responsibility by:

  • Ensuring vehicles are safe and roadworthy
  • Obeying traffic laws and posted speed limits
  • Never drinking and driving
  • Avoiding driving while fatigued
  • Wearing seatbelts
  • Eliminating distractions while driving

“The impact of losing even one life on our roads is devastating,” said PainIntoPurpose Bermuda. “These tragedies affect families, friends, first responders, and the wider community. Sea of Blue Day serves as both a memorial and a call to action—asking each of us to consider what changes we can make to save lives.”

A spokesperson added, “On January 16, residents are encouraged to Paint Bermuda Blue by:

  • Wearing PainIntoPurpose Road Safety Awareness blue shirts
  • Dressing in blue attire
  • Wearing a blue ribbon
  • Writing with a blue pen

“Participants are also invited to perform a Random Act of Kindness in memory of someone who has lost their life or been injured in a road traffic accident. These acts of compassion help families transform their grief into purpose and healing.

“Sea of Blue Day also acknowledges the emotional and psychological toll experienced by first responders, who regularly attend road traffic accidents and witness their devastating consequences firsthand.

“Community members are encouraged to share photos of their participation on social media and tag @PainIntoPurposeBermuda on Instagram and Facebook using the hashtags #PainIntoPurpose and #PainIntoPurposeBermuda.

“Together, let us remember, raise awareness, and save lives. Join us and Paint Bermuda Blue on Friday, January 16, 2026.”

66 lives in 6 years makes us the per capita road death capital of the western world.
It’s time to wake up and look at the true underlying cause. Yes there is bad driving and there is drunk driving, but the main cause is driving on bikes.
Almost all road deaths are on 2 wheels.
The one car per household law is killing our men – yes, it’s mostly men on bikes.
Allow folk to have multiple small electric cars and the death toll will plummet.

People who are lawless and out of control on bikes don’t change when they get behind a steering wheel . Or haven’t you noticed ?

Why should we clog up the roads with even more traffic because some people are a law unto themselves ?

“but the main cause is driving on bikes”

I disagree. The main cause is the lack of enforcement of the suggestions of the road (formally known as the Road Traffic Act). The Bermuda Police Service stopped enforcing the suggestions of the road about 20 years ago.
