Navigate: Sky-High Art Debuts For Local Events
A new local company is bringing drone light shows to Bermuda, using synchronised displays to project spectacular animated images, logos and messages into the night sky.
Navigate, the island’s first drone light show company, was launched by technology entrepreneur Tre Maxwell and has already delivered three public and private performances.
The company’s debut shows included the MarketPlace Christmas Parade, featuring 200 drones, a private event at The Loren at Pink Beach in Tucker’s Town, and the Bermuda Onion Drop in St George’s on New Year’s Eve.
At 26, Maxwell leads a team of four Bermudians – Cole Heffernan, Liam Wheddon, Connor Somerville and Tristan Mullan – and said the business combines live events with advanced technology, with each drone functioning as a single pixel in a large-scale aerial display.
“We provide a full aerial entertainment service,” Maxwell told Bernews.
“We have a fleet of LED drones synchronised to create different animations, shapes, text and pictures in the sky,” he said.
“It’s the ultimate form of entertainment – we can virtually do anything we want in the sky, which is really cool.”
The idea grew out of personal curiosity rather than a traditional career path, he said.
“Two years ago, I was on YouTube and came across drone light shows,” he said.
“I was pretty much hooked immediately and researched everything I could about drone light shows and the industry.”
Each show is custom-built and requires extensive preparation and testing.
“Every single show is unique,” he said. “It’s a lot of preparation to ensure we match what the client wants, safety is tested and we have all the necessary permits.”
The scale and complexity of each display depend on the number of drones deployed, allowing Navigate to tailor shows to different budgets.
“We’re able to create very complex images depending on how many drones we’re using,” he said.
“We work with the client’s budget; work out how many drones are needed and go from there.”

Technical experience gained through the SailGP Inspire programme helped prepare Mr Maxwell for the demands of the business, including work with an autonomous robotics team.
“I learned about GPS systems, satellites and all that cool stuff,” he said. “It was a great experience.”
Navigate is targeting corporate events, advertising campaigns and private celebrations, while offering an environmentally friendly alternative to fireworks.
“The drones are eco-friendly, and we have big ideas about what we’d like to do,” he said.
“We can work with any budget and create a party. You can also put fireworks on the drones.
“We’re looking forward to the future and continuing to build towards bigger and better shows each year.”
