Conor White said he was surprised after winning a gold medal in his opening event at the Pan American Track Championships in Santiago, Chile, on Thursday [February 19].

Competing in his first major international velodrome competition, White captured the men’s scratch race title, finishing ahead of American Grant Koontz, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Akil Campbell placing third.

The 40-lap, ten-kilometres race featured a 17-rider field, with White posting a time of 11min 32sec.

“I just wanted to see how the race played out,” White told Panamsports.

“It was pretty fast in the beginning, but there was a lull with about eight laps to go, and I just dropped down to test if anyone would follow.

“I committed and thought it might be too early, but I just kept my head down and went.

“With about three laps to go, I figured I should probably be able to hold it. I didn’t expect to win that.”

White also competed in the men’s individual pursuit yesterday, finishing thirteenth in 4:25.697.

He is scheduled to compete in two more events at the championships.
