The Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda will support the participation of up to two residents in a Summer Program in the Azores.

A spokesperson said, “The Portuguese Cultural Association of Bermuda [PCA] is pleased to announce that it will support the participation of up to two residents of Bermuda of Azorean descent in the FLAD Summer Program – Azores, a new international summer programme developed in partnership between the Luso-American Development Foundation [FLAD], the University of the Azores [UAc], and the Regional Government of the Azores.

“The programme will take place from July 1 to July 17, 2026, on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira and is aimed at young people aged 18 to 25 with Azorean heritage. It offers an immersive academic and cultural experience focused on the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of the Azores, while also fostering leadership skills and strengthening transatlantic ties between the Azores and diaspora communities.

“The course will be taught in English and combines theoretical classes, seminars, and study visits across multiple academic fields at the University of the Azores. The academic programme is organized around five main thematic areas:

  • Natural History
  • Settlement and Cultural Heritage
  • Political and Administrative Organization
  • Economic Activity
  • Environmental Governance

“The programme involves all four faculties of the University of the Azores: Agrarian and Environmental Sciences, Business and Economics, Sciences and Technology, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Successful participants will receive 6 ECTS credits [equivalent to 3 U.S. credits] and a bilingual certificate of completion issued by the University.

“The programme is fully funded, covering travel, accommodation, and tuition. Participants are required to pay only a symbolic €50 registration fee upon arrival. In addition, participants sponsored by the PCA will receive a bursary of $1,000 to assist with incidental and personal expenses while in the Azores.

“The PCA is proud to work in partnership with UAc, FLAD, and the Government of the Azores to help ensure a Bermuda presence in this inaugural edition of the programme. Supporting opportunities that strengthen young residents of Bermuda’s connection to their Azorean heritage while promoting academic and cultural exchange is closely aligned with the PCA’s mission.

Chairman of the PCA, Richard Ambrosio, who also serves as member of the Azorean Diaspora Council representing Bermuda, stated as follows: “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with such esteemed institutional partners — the University of the Azores, FLAD, and the Government of the Azores — to make this opportunity possible for residents of Bermuda.

“This programme offers young people a meaningful chance to get to know the Azores firsthand while strengthening the longstanding cultural and historical ties between Bermuda and the Azorean community. It is also a natural continuation of the cooperation established between our association and the Regional Government of the Azores, and we are proud to see that relationship creating new pathways for educational and cultural exchange.”

A spokesperson said, “Young residents of Bermuda of Azorean descent who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply. The PCA will provide sponsorship support for selected participants from Bermuda, subject to confirmation of eligibility and a demonstrated connection to the Bermudian Portuguese community.

“Applications for the programme are now open through to 28 February 2026 and must be submitted through the UAc online application platform: https://inforestudante.uac.pt/ [choosing the option “Degree Application / Candidatura a Curso” when registering for the first time].

“The selection process is conducted jointly by the University of the Azores, FLAD, the Government of the Azores, and the PCA, taking into account academic merit, motivation, and leadership potential within the diaspora community.

“Required documents include a CV, a letter of recommendation, a motivation letter, and an academic transcript.

“The initiative reflects a shared commitment among the organizing institutions to strengthen historical, cultural, and human ties with Azorean diaspora communities and to recognize the important role they play in the international projection of the Azores.
