City Responds To Governance Reform Legislation
The Corporation of Hamilton said they “acknowledge the Government’s reintroduction of legislation amending the governance structure and oversight of the City’s operations.”
City Mayor Charles Gosling said, “Naturally, there are questions and concerns regarding both the process and the potential implications for how the Corporation may operate going forward. That said, if the appointed leadership and the Minister remain committed to the continued wellbeing and enhancement of our capital city, there are opportunities for progress.
“There are a number of long-standing issues where closer coordination between the City and Government could help move matters forward more efficiently, including addressing antisocial behaviour in the City, improving activity in Hamilton Harbour, resolving outstanding parking enforcement matters, and modernising certain operational legislation and ordinances.
“In the short time working with the recently appointed Minister for Municipalities, the Honourable Zane DeSilva, he has demonstrated a willingness to engage, listen to differing perspectives, and work toward practical solutions.
“During my time as Mayor, Council worked to streamline governance processes by reducing the number of committees and meetings, allowing staff to focus more fully on delivering services to the public while maintaining transparency through open Council sessions. As discussions continue, it is my hope that any future Council will benefit from members with strong professional expertise in areas such as law, engineering, and governance. At the same time, it is important to maintain the principle that while Council sets policy and strategic direction, the day-to-day operations of the City are best carried out by the Corporation’s experienced executive team and staff.
“The Privy Council ruling confirmed that the Corporation’s assets will remain the assets of the Corporation. This should provide reassurance to ratepayers and the many residents, businesses, and visitors who rely on the City.
“Until instructed otherwise, the Corporation’s priority remains the continued delivery of services and programmes that support the businesses, residents and visitors who rely on Hamilton every day, as well as the cultural and social life of Bermuda’s capital.
“We also want to reassure our staff and the public that it remains business as usual as the legislative process continues.
“The Corporation will continue to act in the best interests of the City and will work constructively with all stakeholders to ensure stability, continuity, and a strong future for Hamilton.”
The spokesperson said, “The Corporation also notes that the debate took place late in the evening. Given the importance of the issues involved, the City believes they warrant the widest possible public awareness and discussion.”

Dressing which we can commend the workers and staff for the work but at the top,it was hard to let go of “their Corporation” and why hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent all the way to the Privy Council and why you hear comments about “their assets”. It’s hard to say goodbye hut really, that’s not the song to sing with their continued attitude. The best song is “Hit the road jack….”.

The PLP Government cannot sell the Hamilton Docks to developers as it has wanted to do for so long.
