Geraldine Sidders Set For Junior Wushu
Geraldine Sidders is set to represent Bermuda at the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China, as the biennial competition gets underway on Monday [March 23].
Sidders will be accompanied by Bermuda Sanshou Association coaches Garon Wilkinson and Kaelin Cox, along with team leader Nolette Webb.
She will compete in two taolu events — Changquan [long fist] and Gunshu [staff] — disciplines she hopes to contest at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, in October and November.
It will mark the first time Bermuda has been represented at the championships since 2012, when Samir Farquan competed in sanda, the sport’s combat discipline.
Wilkinson, president of the Bermuda Sanshou Association, said Sidders’s selection reflected progress within the programme.
“It’s a testament to the success of our growing taolu programme,” he told Bernews. “A special thank you to our taolu coaches, who have contributed to the overall development of our taolu programme.”
This year’s edition also marks the first time the event has been staged in mainland China and serves as a prelude to wushu’s debut at the Youth Olympics.
