Geraldine Sidders Competes At Junior Wushu
[Updated with video] Geraldine Sidders has begun her campaign at the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China, today [March 26].
Sidders finished 32nd in the gunshu [staff] at the biennial competition.
She will also compete in another taolu event – changquan [long fist].
Sidders has been accompanied by Bermuda Sanshou Association coaches Garon Wilkinson and Kaelin Cox, along with team leader Nolette Webb.
“I was extremely composed and focused, and able to stay in the zone during my event,” Sidders told Bernews.
“Although I had a few deductions, I felt I executed to the best of my abilities. I unlocked a new level fierceness while competing.”
Sidders is the first athlete to represent Bermuda at the championships since 2012, when Samir Farquan competed in sanda, the sport’s combat discipline.
Wilkinson, president of the BSA, said he was delighted with Sidders’s performance.
“I’m very pleased, as she hasn’t been competing in the staff for very long,” Wilkinson said.
“My hope was for Geraldine to bring out the best version of herself, and she did that for sure.
“She did what we knew she was capable of doing.”
Sidders is aiming to compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, in October and November.
