Students and staff at CedarBridge Academy turned March 13th into a celebration of mathematics with their annual Pi Day festivities, an event that is fun and highlights the importance of numbers in everyday life.

The day began with an assembly themed “Inspire,” featuring presentations and trivia questions. The S4 Calculus students were professionally attired to reflect their future careers, sharing how pi applies in their chosen fields.

The Mathematics Department presented the Pi Award to Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers [BILTIR] for their robust and ongoing support of the IGCSE Math program, including tutoring and donations of scientific calculators.

Retired math teacher and Instructional leader, Mr. Robert Steede was also honored for his mentorship and leadership in mathematics at CBA and across Bermuda. Alumna, Ashjuana Thomas, praised Mr. Steede for his guidance on helping her not just to understand math but to love and appreciate the subject.

Each awardee was presented with a plaque bearing the inscription “Like Pi your impact is infinite.”

Students were also treated to a pizza lunch, and those who answered pi-related questions correctly got the chance to literally pie a prefect, adding a fun and educational value.

The main event, the Pi Memorization Contest, saw many students vying for a $314 prize. The winner, S2 student London Wheatley, recited 74 digits of Pi, an impressive achievement that reflected his dedication and perseverance. Second and third place were extremely close with Etana Holdipp-Lynch reciting 39 digits, and Angelina Azzario-Mackenzie 38.

London stated, “I was determined to win. I practiced 5-10 digits daily until I memorized them’’. He added that he plans to use some of his prize to purchasing games, and celebrate a friend’s birthday, joking, “Practice makes $314”.

CedarBridge Academy’s Pi Day celebration not only showcased mathematical prowess and accomplishment but also helped students to see the real-world relevance of math for daily life and future professions.
