Video: Kamau Leverock Interviewed In India
Cricketer Kamau Leverock has featured in a video interview on the India Tigers social media channel.
The former Bermuda all-rounder spoke about his cricketing heritage, which includes his uncles, former West Indies batter Alvin Greenidge and Bermuda slow left-arm bowler Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock.
The left-handed batter scored a team-high 49 off 37 balls in the Tigers’ recent 17-run defeat by the Mumbai Spartans.
“I’ve been to India four or five times, but it’s my first time in Haldwani,” Leverock said. “It’s nice – it’s a beautiful city.
“I’ve got cricket on both sides of my family. I had an uncle, my dad’s brother, who played for the West Indies in the 1980s, and my uncle Dwayne, who played for Bermuda.
“I was passionate about cricket from a young age. I was actually in the Barbados newspaper when I was about two.
“They were calling me the next Brian Lara because I was quite young playing cricket!”
Although Leverock, 31, retired from international cricket at a relatively young age, he said he continues to value his experience in the professional game.
“I retired quite young – I’m the youngest in the dressing room,” he said.
“It’s great to be around so many great players. My favourite team-mate is Kirk Edwards [the former West Indies batsman].
“We have had similar careers; we both started quite young and I watched him as a young kid in Barbados.”
Leverock also spoke about the state of cricket in Bermuda.
“Back home in Bermuda, cricket was quite serious,” he said.
“It’s kind of dying down because kids are choosing football.
“We have a lot of professional footballers, not too many professional cricketers.
“There’s just me and Delray Rawlins who have represented Bermuda on a global scale.
“Hopefully, the kids watching me on TV here can help ignite cricket on the island.”
Leverock previously played for the Gujarat Greats in the Legends League Cricket and has also represented Voyagers in the Bim10 tournament in Barbados.
He also played for the Florida Scorpions in the Champions Open T20 Tournament in Canada.
