Bermudian rugby union player Jamin Hodgkins is in line to make his debut for Manly Marlins in their Shute Shield season opener on Saturday [April 11].

The fly-half is expected to feature in his side’s away fixture against the Hunter Wildfires at the Newcastle No 2 Sports Ground in Newcastle West.

The 23-year-old most recently represented the Pacific Pride Academy in the British Columbia Premier League.

The Shute Shield is the premier club competition in New South Wales, and Hodgkins hopes a strong season can strengthen his bid to return to the Canada national team set-up before the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be hosted in Australia.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Hodgkins told Bernews in a recent interview.

“The Shute Shield is renowned as one of the best semi-professional leagues.

“There will be guys playing from Super Rugby [Australia’s top competition] who aren’t getting minutes.”

A former Bermuda Under-19 international and Warwick Academy student, Hodgkins has previously played club rugby in the United Kingdom, including spells with Luctonians First XV in England, and Bridgend and Glamorgan Wanderers in Wales.
