Whale Documentary Gets Extra Screening
An additional screening of the documentary, If They Were Us: The Humpback Whales of the Sargasso Sea, will take place at Speciality Cinema on April 8.
Filmmaker Andrew Stevenson said two premiere showings at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute sold out, prompting requests for another opportunity to view the film.
“I’ve been asked by so many people who could not see my film at BUEI to screen it again,” Mr Stevenson told Bernews.
The documentary, which will be screened at 7pm, follows a family’s journey alongside North Atlantic humpback whales, combining scientific research with personal storytelling.
Filmed over several years, it features aerial and underwater footage and explores the whales’ recovery after being hunted to near extinction.
Narrated through the perspective of Stevenson’s daughters, the film aims to present an accessible and family-oriented story while highlighting broader environmental themes.
“This film is more than a story about whales, it’s about us: dreaming, recreating ourselves, and discovering once again a passion and meaning in life,” Mr Stevenson said.
Mr Stevenson said he does not expect further screenings in Bermuda in the immediate future, but interest in the film is growing internationally, with invitations to present it at venues overseas.
“As a father and researcher, I’ve spent twenty years on the water around Bermuda with my daughters, witnessing the social complexity and resilience of the humpback whales,” Mr Stevenson added.
“My third film on humpbacks, it is my way of sharing that wonder, and optimism, while reminding us of our responsibility and connection to the natural world.”
