Joseph Edward Cabral
[AMIS Memorial Chapel & Crematory]
Joseph Edward Cabral of Smiths, Bermuda, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025 in his 82nd year of life. Born in Devonshire, Bermuda, he was the son of the late John Cabral and Amelia “Pinky” Gumbs [née Barton].
Known to most as Joe or Joe-Joe, he was a man of humor, wit, and unmistakable stubbornness—with a heart rooted deeply in family and the natural beauty of Bermuda. He passed on his love for the ocean, the outdoors, reading and gardening to his children, shaping their lives with his passions and philosophies.
Joe wired half the island as an electrician, kept golfers on their toes as a ranger at the Mid-Ocean Club, and entertained walkers along the railway trail with stories during his retirement. After suffering a stroke at a young age, he met life’s challenges head-on, never allowing it to dim his spark. He relished lively intellectual debates with anyone he encountered and considered it a civic duty to engage [and outlast] unsolicited sales callers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lorrinda Cabral, his brother Frank Cabral, his children Christopher Joseph Cabral and Jennifer Lyn Cabral Battleson, daughter-in-law Vivienne Lochhead, son-in-law Charlie Battleson, and his grandchildren Rogan Cabral, Caelan Cabral, Lincoln Battleson, and Isla Battleson. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Gladys Cabral and Amelia “Millie” Pinder.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal funeral or service will be held. Instead, the family invites you to raise a glass in his honor. Contributions in Joe’s memory may be made to Bermuda Dementia or Agape House—two organizations that brought comfort to Joe and his loved ones in his final years.
Joe’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed—and if you listen closely, you might just hear him still “barely surviving,” with a chuckle and a story at the ready.
