Further Information

  • Kavin Smith holds the records for most wins – nine. This is disputed in some circles due to discrepancies from decades ago. Some say Sir Stanley Burgess holds the record with 10 or 11 wins, while Kavin Smith is officially recognized as the record holder with 9 wins.
  • The 2009 second placer was Olympic triathlete Tyler Butterfield, whose mother Debbie Butterfield holds the record of 7 wins in the female division of the May 24th half marathon
  • 2009 saw the return of 1978 & 1981 winner Ray Swan, who ran his first half marathon in twenty years – at the age of 71
  • In 2008, the winner Christopher Estwanik set a new record of 1:08.25, finishing over 4 mins ahead of the second placer. His wife Ashley won the women’s division making them the first husband wife team to win the May 24th in the same year.
  • The brother of the 2007 winner Larry Marshall is also a top runner – Lamont Marshall
  • Stanley Burgess, a multiple time winner in the 1940′s and 50′s, competed in the race for sixty years. He competed from 1921 to 1983 running well into his 80′s. His 1951 win came at age 49, making him the oldest runner to win the race. A perennial crowd favourite, in later years the crowd was well known not to leave until the elderly Mr. Burgess finished the race.
  • In a brother/sister victory,Merenette Bean, the sister of 1976 winner Cal Bean won the female division of the race in the same year.
  • The 1964 winner Neville Virgil was followed closely by his twin brother Neil who placed 2nd.
  • John Simon, the 1916 winner, was the first Bermudian winner.
