March 12, 2010

835376_88861470Watch below as Minister Glenn Blakeney discusses the rental of guns in Bermuda.

Minister Blakeney says that “Those that are in possession of them, are sometimes renting them out for two, three thousand dollars“.

He goes on to discuss the probability of forensic testing confirming this theory.

Rampant gun crime is a fairly recent phenomenon in Bermuda, having spiked drastically in the last year.

Data provided by the Bermuda Police shows there were 8 confirmed uses of firearms in the five years prior to 2009, and a total of 15 confirmed uses of firearms in a single year in 2009.

So far in 2010, Bermuda has lost one person to gun violence. 34 year old Perry Puckerin was fatally shot in Hamilton Parish on January 4th. Another non-fatal shooting followed soon after in January, with a 21-year-old man being shot in the leg on Pembroke Park Lane.

Mr. Puckerin’s murder was the fourth in less than one month timespan.
