Bling: Pembroke East Has Lighting Installed

April 16, 2010

Taking action to combat crime and anti-social behaviour, the Government has installed major street lighting all through the Pembroke East Central constituency.

The area, which includes St Monica’s Mission [colloquially known as 42nd], has experienced a recent increase in crime, most notably shootings.

Through a combined effort of the Bermuda Government, MP Michael Weeks, Minister Derrick Burgess, BELCO, and residents co-operation in signing consent forms, the installation of the lights is almost complete. As anyone familiar with the area will know, it was previously extremely poorly lit

There are almost 20 lights in place as of today, spread all through the neighborhood. There are a handful of lights remaining to be installed, which Mr Weeks explained was due to logistical issues of a few very small roads rendering BELCO unable to get their trucks through. A private contractor will assist in that area, and the remaining lights are expected to be completed very shortly.

The industrial strength lights were installed by teams from BELCO, and the project was funded by the Government:

One of the almost 20 new lights is located right in the exact area on St. Monica’s Road which is generally known to have people congregating at certain times:

A light has been placed right in the exact area that Jakai Harford was shot on March 19, 2010. The blue house pictured below is Mr Harford’s residence, where he was sitting outside in a taxi when assailant[s] opened fire:

In good Bermuda style, area MP Michael Weeks [who was raised in the area] seemed to know everyone, and was warmly greeted by neighborhood residents:
