May 24th: CCTV On Parade Route & Bernard Park
Saying that the safety of the general public is of utmost importance and every possible measure will be taken to ensure that the public can have a safe and enjoyable Bermuda Day Holiday, the government has stated that there will be CCTV cameras located throughout the May 24th parade route and at Bernard Park.
Emails had circulated the island recently suggesting the parade route be changed with people fearing gang violence could occur. Emails had also circulated over the last large event, the Ag Show in April, which ended up having a large police presence and was a peaceful event.
The parade, which begins at 1:30 pm,will follow the same route as in previous years. Starting at the junction of Bermudiana Road and Front Street, the parade will continue along Front Street to Court Street where it will make a left turn on to Court Street. The parade will then turn left on to Church Street, make a right turn on to Burnaby Hill, then on to Cedar Avenue and proceed along past the Tennis Stadium to Marsh Folly Road. The parade will then make a right turn on to Dutton Avenue and into Bernard Park.
Always a hugely popular event amongst locals, the parade will feature a large variety of floats, dance groups, majorettes, gombeys and more. The Filipino community, who have participated in the parade for a number of years, did not this year for what they say is fear of a negative reaction. The parade will be carried live on CITV, Cablevision Channel 2, WOW Channel 102 and www.citv.gov.bm.
