Photos: 2010 PGA Grand Slam Day #1
Scroll down for photos of the first day of the 2010 PGA Grand Slam of Golf that held today [Oct 19] at the Port Royal Golf Course. Four of the world’s top golfers are vying for over $1.3 million dollars prize money; Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer, Ernie Els and David Toms. 2001 PGA Champion David Toms, who received a late invitation this month due to South African golfer Louis Oosthuizen’s injury, took the first-round lead.
Hundreds of locals came out for the event, which marks the 4th time it has been held in Bermuda.
After nine holes, Mr Toms had a three stroke lead over Mr McDowell and Mr Els. Mr Toms was 4-under par through nine, while Mr McDowell and Mr Els were both at 1-under par and Martin Kaymer was 1-over par.
On the back nine, Mr Toms shot two birdies and two Bogeys to go with five pars to finish with the first round lead 4-under par. Mr Els had a Birdie on the Par 4 eleventh and a birdie on the Par 4 eighteenth to move to 3-under par.
Mr McDowell lost his ball on the Par 4 eleventh to shot a triple bogey, another bogey on the very next hole saw Mr McDowell fall to 3-over par, however back to back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes saw him finish his round 1-over par. Mr. Kaymer’s bad luck followed him on the back nine when he shot two more bogeys to fall to 3-over par for his First Round.
David Toms, speaking on the Port Royal Golf Course, said “It’s a beautiful spot. You can kind of get caught up on the scenery out there rather than the golf. Enjoyable trip for me.” You can view the full transcript of the golfer’s statements at the press conference this afternoon here.
