The Coach’s wrap up of Day #1 of the contest is below:

BERMUDA vs. ISLE OF WIGHT-Bermuda fell 5-0 against a steady and prepared Isle of Wight squad. Chris Stout was very close to Bermuda’s only win with some brilliant forehand kills. Bermuda rallied and looks to build on their momentum in their upcoming matches.

BERMUDA vs. SHETLAND- Bermuda rebounded with a very closely contested match with Shetland. Although Bermuda came up short on the 3-2 match score, Juliette Ferrera-Macomb found her stride hitting some remarkable volley drops into the Nic. Team member Micah Franklin on Juliette’s performance “she was ripping nics. Look for good things from her in our upcoming matches.” Micah Franklin’s aggressive play on the left side of the court paid dividends as he cruised to a 3-0 victory. Chris Stout followed suit with a 3-0 victory.

BERMUDA vs. JERSEY- Bermuda played their strongest match yet against the pool favourite and perhaps the tournament favourite, Jersey. Jersey took the match in straight sets, but this young squad’s play could be described as ‘GUTSY.’

Micah Franklin played with confidence and determination and was very close to pushing this match to extra games. Micah volleyed and pressed his opponent, but it wasn’t quite enough for an experienced Jersey number 1 with a deadly forehand flick that would be enviable by non-other than Canadian Great Jonathan Power.

Laura Robinson had moments of brilliance playing as she did during her days at Mount Holyoke College. Laura is getting better and better as this event goes on. Laura on her play “I’m careful not to peak too early. We still have lots of time.”

Juliette Ferrerai-Macomb continues to dazzle her opponents by attacking the nics. She played a tough Jersey opponent, but pushed through some grueling rallies.

Chris Stout- Grit, Determination & Endurance describes Chris’ performance in his 3-2 lose in extra points. The retrieval and shot making by him and his opponent stunned the crowd. Chris managed his attacking nature with some well-timed ‘steady as she goes’ straight play. Chris on his performance ” I’m pretty happy with my performance. It could have gone either way. My opponent was a great competitor and it was a tough and fun match to play. I’d like to dedicate my performance to my Mom and Dad.”

Stay tuned for Day II
