Blakeney & Grant Sentenced To 30 Years

December 15, 2011

[Updated with videos] Sanchey Winslow Grant and Jahmel Blakeney were today [Dec. 15] sentenced to 30 years in prison, and must serve at least half that time before being eligible for parole.

Both men were given 15 years on both counts, which is to be served consecutively, meaning they stand to do a maximum of 30 years.

They must serve half of both sentences before they can be considered for parole, and the time they have already spent in prison can be counted against one of the fifteen year sentences.

Justice Greaves called it an “execution style shooting” and it was “only because of a miracle that no one else was hurt.” He said the shootings are “gang enforcement policies,” which as the  ”worst type of activities, should attract the highest penalties.”

As the men were being lead out, a female [believed to be a family member] could be heard shouting, “I don’t care what they say, I know you are innocent. You’re innocent.”

Jahmel Blakeney did not appear to be happy when he left, and spat on the media as he exited court. A photo of him spitting can be seen by clicking here, we posted a link rather than a full photo so you can choose whether to view it or not.

Video of the two men leaving Court, and Mr Blakeney spitting on a cameraman:

Mr. Grant, 20, and Mr. Blakeney, 30, had previously been convicted of attempted murder - a 2009 shooting which left two people injured.

On November 13, 2009, Shaki Minors [then 26] and his girlfriend Renee Kuchler [then 24], were both shot multiple times as they left Southside Cinema in St. David’s at approximately 11.30 pm.

Both victims were rushed to hospital, and recovered from their injuries although Ms Kuchler’s pregnancy ended as a result of the shooting, and she still walks with a cane.  She had been shot in her mid-section and leg, while Mr. Minors was shot multiple times in his arms and midsection.

Jahmel Blakeney was arrested shortly after the shooting, placed on Police bail, however left the island in November 2009. The Bermuda courts issued an arrest warrant for him in April, 2010.

Following investigations, Mr. Blakeney [who holds dual Bermuda and American citizenship] was located in New York and arrested in June 2010 by the US Marshals Service on an international arrest warrant.

He fought being returned to the island through legal channels but was eventually extradited to Bermuda from New York in April, 2011.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro speaking after the verdict:

Sanchey Winslow Grant was originally charged in April, 2010, and has been in custody since that time.

During the trial prosecutors alleged that Mr. Grant was the actual shooter and that both men are said to be affiliated with Parkside. Victim Mr. Minors was said to be affiliated with 42.

Prior to the attempted murder verdict, the jury had been directed to find the pair not guilty of gun and ammunition possession.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said, “I won’t go into the specifics on the sentencing obviously, as that is subject to appeal, but I think it speaks volumes to the fact that enough is enough, and that people are tired.”

“Two victims, one particularly innocent victim in this matter, suffering horrendous injuries, lost her child as a result of this shooting, and obviously the Courts took that into consideration in handing out this sentence.”

  1. Organic Bermudian says:

Good and thank God the appeal to bring him (Blakeney) back home was WON otherwise this MONSTER would have gotten away with it!!

    • PEPPER says:

You have to wonder why this young man(Blakeney) took the course of being a member of a gang !!!I do rember his father being charged with threatening Gary Moreno, awhile back at cup match…

      • Yup says:

        OOOw…what his daddy do???

      • Pepper = PLP hater says:

Pepper you always aiming stuff at a PLP MP. Don’t act like the UBP boys kids are so innocent. Yes we all know that the PLP has been doing some BS for the last few years, but keep it real the UBP was doing it for well over 30 years when they was in power.

I mean the truth be told they didn’t have anything for the black Bermudian man. Now they change the name over night just to get blacks to vote for them,

I mean come on, how stupid do the UBP/OBA boys think blacks are.

You all want to blame the PLP’s economics on how the Country is doing. I guess the president of the USA is PLP too cause we all know Uncle Sam is not doing well either and neither is the rest of the World.

        • Tolerate says:

That a real dumb thing to say, and I don’t usually make comments to provoke responses. This “Apples don’t fall far from the tree”, is a load of BS and a means to take a shot at a man at his lowest time. I have an 18 year old and as much as I have to fight every day to reinforce the right in him, it remains a challenge. I am not going to go into defending myself or trying to prove I am a good person, but don’t read into all kids around Bermuda doing a pack of nonsense being directly related to poor upbringing. I know personally kids who have been afforded every opportunity with constant family reinforcement who remain on the wall when it comes to moving forward positively or negatively in their life. I too may not be a fan of this loser’s father, but as a father I know the questions you continue to ask yourself, even after everyone around you is telling you that you did your best.
The family values have ceased to exist in most youngsters today and loyalty is being swayed in the direction towards the losers who constantly encourage negative behavior. It is easier to follow the path of wrong as it takes NO effort, however for most; to follow the path of righ, it’s a challenge day in and day out.
I feel for Mr. Blakeney and only hope that he can forgive himself and move on knowing he has done all he could do.

      • Big D says:

    • PEPPER says:

Can someone let me know if Doctor Brown’s son ( kevin) has been sentenced ?

        • Yup says:

Why did I click onto that with Blakeney spitting. Send him to Cuba. Send him to the moon!! That was one total sh!t. See ya for 15 years at least idiot looser!!!!

Why is it when these THUGS are living everyday lives and are invited to SPECIAL events (church for weddings, christenings, funerals) they come dressed in jeans a a topsaying they do not even own a suit but invite them to the SUPREME COURT and all of a sudden they have suits to wear! Things that make me go HMMMM????

  5. Jes sayin says:

What a shame that these young men have fallen off the face of civilized society. From the nasty photo of young Mr. Blakeney spitting at the media, it looks like he’s gonna be on the dark side for good, leading a life of crime. What a waste of a human life.

  6. Say Say Say (not says) says:

As much as I dislike his father and his politics, I feel sorry for him for this. You do your best as a parent and your kid does something like this.

    • sharky says:

Parents too busy making money and smoozing with the big shots.Bad apples don’t fall too far from the tree.(this post likely to be censored)

      • Lazy Fools says:

Makes you wonder… If you do such a poor job at raising a child and teaching him morals (or not), how good can you be as a government minister?

There goes daddy’s career…or wait, this is the PLP we’re talking about- daddy just got a promotion!

        • bermygirl66 says:

You are a lazy fool. Once your child reaches a certain age you have no influence on them. You have no part of any decision that they make good or bad. I don’t remember his father going to jail. No he became the Premier of Bermuda whether you like him or not. He is not responsible for his childs behavior.

      • bermygirl66 says:

I hope all of you getting a laugh of others troubles will never one day have someone you love (or you) in similar circumstances. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. I hope you never feel the pain of having your child or family member facing prison or worse.
I never thought the Bermudians were so cold, that the could have no sympathy for a mother put in prison for eight years or for anyone that fhas fallen afoul of the law.
Justice must be served but to take pleasure???

  7. Skink says:

I’ve always thought spitting was the utmost disrespect a person could give…….my must his family be so proud. Keep it to the Lamas I say!!!

  9. mixitup says:

Did I hear someone say “he innocent?” lady the jury has spoken, its people like you who don’t hold them accountable for the small things that lead to this end.

  10. Rick Rock says:

After that one got away a year or so ago it’s surprising they aren’t in ankle shackles when they’re brought out. The public need to be protected from any risk at all of these idiots getting away. Put them in shackles 24 hours a day.

And let’s hope that within 15 years we have a parol board with a bit more common sense than the current one. These thugs should do the full 30 years.

  11. k says:

after the spit they shouldve taken him back inside for the judge to say “oops the full 30 it is , enjoy “

  17. Amazed says:

30 years the other guy is not coming back, that is ridiculous and we have to pay to keep these guys alive. Send them to Iceland.

  18. Malachi says:

Since Ms Kuchler lost her child, why were they not charged with murder or manslaughter, or at the very least, causing the death of an unborn child? Is it that from a legal standpoint the unborn child is not considered a person? And if that is so, then why isn’t abortion legal?

    • Mike Oxlong says:

      It is legal. Fool

      • Malachi says:

Mike Oxlong………you really don’t know me well enough to call me a fool.

Please note I am asking questions.

Now I know you well enough to call you a fool!

  21. The Ridiculist says:

Carlise Greaves..Thank You!! For it is you who is making a difference in our island with the stiff penalties that are being handed out. It is You who is realizing the seriousness of what we are against with these crimnals. And with that said I am happy to say that you rock. Keep up the great work.

  22. Vix says:

  24. don't bash says:

Come on you lot – defend the Party, you should have posted 51 comments by now to distance the MPs, from the actions of their families. Get on message and use the blogs to talk to voters for elections, we must “get on message” and defend the indefinsible.

  25. john says:

an he used to try to rap ,, was real serious about it to,,, sounded like sh!t by the way

  26. Towhereas says:

Parole shouldn’t even be an option… also, since the gov needs to reduce costs, how about cutting off all air-conditioning in West Gate, along with the other luxuries us tax-payers have to pay for. Make West Gate a fricking horrible place to be…

    • Mussel Pie says:

I am in total agreement with this. No luxuries or creature comforts of any kind. Make them work.

  27. Pay for their stay says:

In order for us to save some money in this country, we should follow other prisons in the world and make the inmates pay for their stay. Charge them a fee for each nights stay. They should only get the very no name basics, not the NIKE sneakers, dicks cargo pants, etc.

Col. Lamb, please get the prison in order.

    • Yup says:

Yeah Col. Lamb…run it like a prison and not a Hotel!!!!! Bunch of mama boys need a good whoop’n!!!!

  28. Skink says:

Was he in an accident a few years back, getting chased by the PoPo on Stowe hill, one way going down to Harbour road and smashed the car all up??…..keep the slack tight……riiiiiight!!

  29. Somerset Girl says:

I am pleased that these guys are behind bars. I am not pleased that taxpayers have to support them. We need to figure out a way to truly make them pay for their crimes and their sentences. I find it disturbing that we spend more money on an inmate than a child’s education or the elderly. Its truly a dilemma because these guys truly are sick and dangerous and have no respect for human life including their own! I am tired of paying for them! Since capital punishmenti is taboo, what if we charge a percentage of the costs to the inmates family members?
