Photos: St Peter’s Hosts Diamond Jubilee Service
Yesterday [June 3] a Service of Thanksgiving for the Diamond Jubilee of HM the Queen was held at St. Peter’s Church in St. George’s,
The service was followed by Jubilee Garden Party in the churchyard which featured the debut performance of the Jubilee Fanfare, commissioned of Major D. B. Robinson EM, Director of Music, Bermuda Regiment.
Those in attendance included Governor George Fergusson, Deputy Governor David Arkley, Acting Premier Michael Scott, Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier, UBP Leader Kim Swan, St George’s Mayor Kenny Bascome, Education Minister and St George’s MP Dame Jennifer Smith, Tourism & Business Minister Wayne Furbert, PLP MP Lovitta Foggo and more.
The Bermuda Regiment Band welcomed the arrival of the Governor at 11am with trumpets, while a group of Sea Cadets lined the church’s path. After the ceremony, Minster Scott and the Governor planted a commemorative tree in the churchyard.
Bermuda’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations started on Saturday with a Flotilla of boats making their way from Hamilton to the west end.
Governor George Fergusson also participated in the “Lighting of Beacons,” with Bermuda’s Beacons joining thousands lit in areas throughout the UK, Commonwealth and British Overseas Territories.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, re-designated St. Peter’s Church as ‘Their Majesties Chappell’, in honour of the church’s 400th anniversary.
The Rev’d David Raths, the Incumbent of St Peter’s, expressed his delight with The Queen’s gift to the church: “This honour of a royal title acknowledges the faithful witness and service of the people of this parish for four hundred years.
“They can take pride in being honoured by the Queen and that their church has been recognized and acknowledged as a religious, historic and cultural icon of Bermuda.”
