Mickelson Takes Third Spot In PGA Grand Slam
Phil Mickelson came from five strokes back to clinch his first Open title and fifth major on the final day of the British Open today [July 21], booking his ticket to the 2013 PGA Grand Slam in Bermuda.
Mickelson fired a final-round 5-under 66 to finish at 3 under par at Muirfield Golf Club and win the British Open for the first time. He was five shots behind 54-hole leader Lee Westwood when the day began.
“This is such an accomplishment for me,” Mickelson said. “I never knew if I’d be able to develop the game and the shots to play links golf effectively. To play what is arguably the best round of my career, to putt the way I putted, to shoot the round of my life, it just feels amazing to win the claret jug.”
With the victory, Mickelson became the third player to qualify for golf’s most exclusive foursome, joining Adam Scott and Justin Rose in the 2013 PGA Grand Slam of Golf to be played Oct. 14-16, 2013, at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.
The Grand Slam features the winners of the year’s four Major Championships – the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, the PGA Championship and the Masters. Only players who have won a Major can earn a spot in the elite foursome.
The event will take place from October 14 to 16, and broadcast to a worldwide audience by Turner Sports on TNT. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.
