Ministry Updates On Sunday Bus Cancellations

March 7, 2015

The cancellation of bus runs continues on Sunday [March 8], with the Department of Public Transportation providing an updated list of bus service cancellations.

The cancellations have been an ongoing issue lately, with Transport Minister Shawn Crockwell previously explaining that, “The Department of Public Transport currently has 10 bus operators who are out on long term sick leave and the service has been further impacted by operators out sick during this cold and flu season. In addition, the department has implemented a ban on overtime and the combination of these factors is impacting the scheduling of bus runs.”

The list, as provided by the Department, is below:

So what happened at their meeting on Friday?

    Did anyone show up?

  2. WarwickBoy says:

I would think that bus drivers out on short term sick leave, ie due to colds and flu, would be day to day, yes? Presumably they would call in sick early on Sunday if they weren’t able to come to work on Sunday? If that is the case, how can PTB know how many drivers they will have tomorrow?

  3. positivity says:

A lot of excuses with no solutions.

  4. STILL LOOKING FOR A JOB says:

    A BUNCH OF B$$$

Still to this day that have never once acknowledge my resume for PTB.

  5. Sky Pilot says:

    SSDD.

    Time to go PRIVATE.

    • Robert says:

Thats you peoplessolution to everything nowadays!!!

      • somuchless says:

Well we all know that things seem go a lot better. Just look at a lot of over departments and projects handled by gov.

  6. Just wondering says:

all this gets a person to thinking –
    1. Does anyone know if the PTB actually makes money for the Government? I mean after all the sick time vacations etc etc and of course all the overheads – i.e. does it actually make a profit?
    2. If the answer to the above is “no” then why doesn’t the Government shut this shambles down asap – pay massive redundancy (it will be cheaper) and put out to tender for a private company to actually run it – it can be done with government oversight – sillier to BELCo/TLCO for example
    3. If the answer to question 1 is “yes” then the Government ought to still privatise as it will get more revenue if it concessions out the business –
why is the bermuda taxpayer having to pay for this disaster?

    • Varied says:

I don’t think public transportation was ever designed to be a profitable business… it’s a service for those who choose to or cannot purchase private transportation, including seniors and students. And that’s without even going into the suggested issues of employee pay and benefits.

  7. Just wondering says:

sorry that should have read “SIMILAR to BELCO/TELCO for example”

  8. bluebird says:

Interesting how not one bus service in the Carabbean Islands is run by Goverment neither are the Ferries.
Went to London for a couple of weeks and all the busses and trains are PRIVATE Companies,
AND WHAT A PLEASURE IT WAS TO USE THEM,as i had worked in london some years ago and noticed the increadable difference.

    • Varied says:

You’ve been called out on this in the past, yet you persist, why is this? There are government-run public transport systems in the Caribbean. It’s one thing to be for privatisation, but another thing to twist facts around.

Advocating for private-run bus or minibus service to accompany or replace the government model should be done properly.

  9. bermy Bud says:

    Reliability= Privatization
Um not the one for privatization on everything, but if it will be more dependable and efficient why not.

  10. Kim W. says:

If this continues, passengers on cruise ships will have to cancel their visit to your beautiful island & go elsewhere to spend there money. Our ship arrives in Bermuda on a Sunday, What if we are unable to get around to spend our money in your country? What’s going to happen to your business’?

  11. navin johnson says:

stinks like a deliberate attempt to make the Government look bad..how can you be short handed on Sunday with limited schedule..privatize and find a way to week out the drones….

  12. MAKE MY DAY says:

The BIU and their “Hierarchy” are beyond disgraceful!!There is a price-to-pay for everything and much more of this nonsense – then BDA will pay for it!!
