Orange Bay Company Donates $5,000 To BCHC
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre [BCHC] recently received a donation of $5,000 from the Hamilton-based Orange Bay Company, a seven-year-old furniture and apparel consignment operation.
Orange Bay Company has raised over $80,000 in charitable funds since its inception in 2009 with the support of partnering organisations and individuals.
The husband and wife team at the helm of the business, Rudolph and Delight Morris, were keen to “start a business that would incorporate their passions, meet a market need, and have a positive impact on the community it served.”
Co-owner Delight Morris said, “Our consignors have helped us build this community of upcyclers, and treasure hunters who care about their community.”
Delight Morris and Tara Soares, Executive Director, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre:
“We donate clothing, furniture and other needed items to registered charities across the island, including Bermuda Red Cross, Upstairs Closet, the St. Georges Foundation, and The World Heritage Centre’s Second Hand Rose thrift shop on behalf of our consignor community, as well as a major annual cash donation.”
“It matters to us, and to our consignors, that our gifts are given to registered charities that offer a valuable service to the community or deserving individuals, use their resources prudently and quite frankly, that touch our heart.
“Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is a robust organisation that has been a crucial ally for thousands of cancer patients and their families in Bermuda. From their work conducting screenings, to the much needed support services for the hundreds of clients who discover their cancer each year, their work has a big impact on cancer care.
“Sadly, with the loss in 2015 of a dear family friend to cancer, I gained a deeper understanding of the devastation cancer can wreak on patients and those of us who love them. In August 2015, a dear family friend, June Dupres, succumbed to her battle with cancer.”
June Dupres:
“As a community we are so grateful for the work the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre does during such a heartbreaking crisis.
“While she was fortunate enough to be fully insured, we decided that through our donation we could target the funds to the under-insured to ensure that others who may face the disease without the benefit of adequate insurance could still have access to the best care options available.”
Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, said, “Our small island community sees an average of three hundred cancer diagnoses annually with a heart-breaking one hundred patients losing the battle against the disease every year.
“By introducing Bermuda’s first radiation treatment facility to the island, a greater number of clients who are uninsured or underinsured and struggle to find the funds to meet the medical and travel costs of cancer care, will have an opportunity to be cared for locally amidst the support of family and friends.”
