Deloitte Hosts Annual Community Impact Day
Deloitte Bermuda held its 2024 Impact Day on November 7, with 90 employees volunteering across six locations.
A spokesperson said, “At Deloitte, our purpose—Making an impact that matters— guides everything we do, from hiring and learning and development to who we want to be for our customers and the communities in which we live and work.
“Impact Day is Deloitte’s annual celebration of our commitment to community investment in Bermuda.
“Deloitte held its 2024 annual Impact Day on Thursday, November 7. Deloitte staff members set aside their work for the day to contribute towards this initiative. A total of 90 employees took part this year at six locations, aligning to Deloitte’s Corporate Responsibility Pillars: Youth; Seniors; Education and the Environment.
“Each site was hosted by a different non-profit, included Habitat for Humanity, The Bermuda Zoological Society, The Bermuda Audubon Society, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, St. George’s Foundation, and Waterstart.”
Volunteers at for the Bermuda Zoological Society met at the Trunk Island where they worked on clearing invasive species and replanting. Ian Walker, Principal Curator, says, “We are thrilled to have Deloitte as a valued partner and deeply appreciate their continued support of BZS. Their team’s dedication, especially during their annual Impact Day on Trunk Island, plays a pivotal role in advancing our important conservation projects. The time and effort they invest directly contribute to our shared mission of preserving this vital ecosystem for future generations.”
Keep Bermuda Beautiful hosted Deloitte staff for an east-end beach clean up, starting the day with a tour of the recycling plant. Angel Smith, Executive Director, says, “We are truly grateful for the time Deloitte dedicated to touring the Material Recovery Facility and for their hard work in cleaning up Coopers Island and the neighbouring beaches. The team of 13 staff collected a total of 11 trash bags and 1 recycling bag. We deeply appreciate the support in helping us keep Bermuda beautiful and are grateful to have had Deloitte with us for this day of community and care.”
A group of staff members spent the day with the Habitat for Humanity team, helping to restore and renovate a Devonshire home for a family in-need. Sheelagh Cooper, Chair, commented, “We are gobsmacked at the speed with which the Deloitte team painted Habitats latest project. It’s really quite amazing what a group of accountants can do – they are the best painters because they pay attention to detail!”
Phoebe Barboza-Bellamy, Research and Operations Manager at Waterstart, who was part of the hosting team at the Burt Island environmental hub, commented, “Waterstart would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Deloitte and their incredible volunteers for their hard work and dedication during the 2024 Impact Day at our island classroom on Burt Island. The team not only immersed themselves in our mission, learning about our restoration work and conservation goals, but also made a significant impact on our grounds by clearing invasive species around our water catchment area, painting buildings, watering young trees, maintaining paths, and even assisting with shellfish counts in our restoration nets. Their efforts have brought tremendous value to our work, and we are deeply grateful for both their volunteer commitment and Deloitte’s financial support. We look forward to welcoming them back to Burt Island!”
Jimmy Caplice, Partner & Chair of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee: “Impact Day represents our commitment to investing in our local community. Deloitte is pleased to have partnered with six organizations for Impact Day this year. We hope that that the time volunteered by our staff will allow these non-profits to continue to focus on providing valuable services to the public for educational and environmental purposes.”
