May 13, 2016

Stuart Jackson Hayward Bermuda May 13 2016 In order to mark Stuart Hayward’s 74th birthday, the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce [BEST] has launched a “74th Birthday Campaign.”

BEST said, “Stuart Jackson Hayward was born in Bermuda on May 19th, 1942, the oldest child of school-teacher Mary Jackson Hayward and jazz pianist Lance Hayward.

“For over 40 years Stuart has built a reputation as an environmental activist and educator. He has devoted himself to improving the quality of life for all Bermudians.

“Today, Stuart heads the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce [BEST]. BEST is well known as the environmental watchdog and protector of open spaces.

“Formed in 2007, the registered charity and limited liability company, is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and run by a volunteer Management Team. Operations are managed by three part-time consultants. Amazing, considering the impact BEST continues to have on the toughest environmental issues facing Bermuda.

“BEST is committed ‘To preserve and enhance the quality of life in Bermuda for present and future generations by engaging with the community to advocate for sustainable management and development of the physical, social and economic environments.”

“As Stuart is fond of saying, ‘We walk and talk softly but carry a fairly big stick.“

“To sincerely thank Stuart for his work and celebrate his 40 years of actively protecting & preserving our island environment, BEST has launched a very special 74th Birthday Campaign to assist him in continuing the work that he loves; the work that benefits all of us who live, work and vacation here.”

“BEST is inviting 74 BEST friends to help raise $25,000 and welcome the community to contribute and show Stuart their love and appreciation. To make Stuart’s birthday wishes come true, donations can be made online at www.best.org.bm, by direct deposit to their Butterfield Bank account #20-006-060-625713-100 or by presenting a cheque or cash to BEST’s offices in the Cedar Park Centre, 48 Cedar Avenue, Hamilton.

“Donations will be accepted until June 10th, but it is hoped friends and supporters will make their contribution by May 19th, Stuart’s actual birthday.

“Members of our community are also invited to pop-in to BEST’s offices and enjoy cake and refreshments with Stuart and his BEST friends on May 19th, from 12 noon to 3pm.

“Please support Stuart Hayward’s 74th Birthday Campaign and invest in a sustainable future for Bermuda, while sending your best wishes and thanks for his enormous contribution to enriching our lives.”

Kim Smith, Resources Administrator at BEST added, “Stuart has served quietly and effectively for decades in Bermuda ever reminding us that meaningful policy and practices protect us now and for future generations. I am delighted to celebrate the many accomplishments of my friend and colleague at BEST.”

We have great admiration for Stuart Hayward and all that he has done to protect Bermuda’s environment. He has worked tirelessly to keep open spaces and woodlands from being bulldozed down and concrete poured over. The attention and education that he has brought to light on so many cases…too numerous to list here, however two that spring to mind were saving our Botanical Gardens from becoming hospital grounds and protecting Southlands for future generations. Thank you from your friends over at KBB. We wish you a very happy birthday and urge people to support your fundraising campaign to keep you doing what you do BEST!
