June 29, 2016

The Bermuda Gymnastics Association is continuing its successful showing at the USAIGC World Tournament, currently being held in Orlando, Florida at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Hotel.

Head Coach Adriana Forde said, “Sanaa Burgess [11-years-old, Bronze] showed overall excellence yesterday as she qualified to all four event finals scheduled for this afternoon [June 28th, 2016] after her fifth place finish in yesterday’s qualification and all around competition.

“Teammates Laura Hupman, Annabelle Miller and Bailey Boyd followed in Burgess’ footsteps with some of their most impressive gymnastics this season. Miller will have an opportunity to compete in the Floor Event Finals with teammate Bailey Boyd who placed 5th overall in yesterday’s all around competition qualifying her onto three Event Finals [Vault, Beam and Floor] this afternoon with Burgess.

“Bethany Cooze and Ella Tear finished up their World Championships experience yesterday with top 10 finishes on their individual event final routines which they qualified for after a truly inspiring all around competition on Sunday, June 26th.

“Monday, June 27 morning sessions. We congratulate Bethany Cooze and Ella Tear [Bronze 10 year old Finals] in qualifying to the second day of competition [Event Finals]. Both girls had huge smiles on their faces as they finished top 10 in their individual events final routines. Bethany places 9th on Beam and Floor and Ella placed 7th on Vault.

“Sanaa Burgess [[11-years-old, Bronze] had a fantastic day in the qualification and all-around competition. Starting off the meet with an impressive 9.450 on floor exercise placed her in second heading into the floor finals. Sanaa continued with a high flying, vault score of 8.750 which put her in 4th place and despite a small error on bars, a score of 8.425 allowed her to swing into 5th position.

“The beam competitors were in a tight race to qualify for finals with only 0.125 points separating Sanaa’s beautiful 9.225, fifth place routine and the first place qualifier. Sanaa’s powerful and beautifully executed routines qualified her to all four event finals and a remarkable 5th place out of 31 competitors in her age group and 7th place finish out the 62 athletes in her division.

“Many heads were turned today with Bailey Boyd’s [11-years-old, Bronze] stunning skill refinement throughout her competitive performance. Out of 31 gymnasts, she placed 5th in the All-Around while also qualifying to event finals for Vault, Beam and Floor.

“Bailey obtained a personal best score on the Balance Beam with an extremely impressive 9.55, placing first. Her Floor routine stunned the crowd with a dramatic but elegant performance, scoring another remarkable 9.425 that placed her 3rd, complemented by another 3rd place on Vault with a score of 8.775.

“Annabelle Miller [11-years-old, Bronze] has proven to be one of the hardest workers in the gym and her perseverance showed in today’s quality of performance. She placed 17th out of 31 athletes and qualified for finals on Floor with a notable score of 9.225 followed by one of her best competitive routines to date on the Balance Beam as she scored a 9.025.

“Ending with her best competitive performance of the year, Laura Hupman [11-years-old, Bronze] proved that her growing confidence has improved her ability to compete under pressure. Laura blew us away with an exceptionally clean routine on the Uneven Bars that scored an 8.075, placing 15th.

“She also proved to be a solid performer on Beam with 16th place with an 8.975 and finished 20th out of 31 gymnasts and shows much promise as she continues to progress.”
