The Cabinet Office held Universal Adult Suffrage events yesterday, with May 22 marking the 50th anniversary of the historic first election under the Bermuda Constitution Order 1968.
A brief speech during the ceremonies by the area Member of Parliament was followed by the unveiling of three plaques, which are placed in three locations which have been polling stations for each General Election since 1968, including Dalton E. Tucker Primary School, Horticultural Hall at the Botanical Gardens, and Francis Patton Primary School.
A special Joint Session of Parliament also took place, with speeches by Premier David Burt, the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate, and a member of the class of 1968 representing the trailblazers who were a part of that historic election.
Following the Joint Session was the unveiling of the official portraits of former Speakers of the House, Mr. Stanley Lowe [Speaker from 1998-2012] and Mr. K. Randolph Horton [Speaker from 2013-2017].
Afterward, a tree planting was held on the grounds.
