Atherden: ‘I Salute All Of Bermuda’s Heroes’
“National Heroes’ Day is, to me, about celebrating our National Heroes as well as those individuals who continuously make a difference in our lives, who silently make sacrifices in order to help others and who go the extra mile time and time again,” Opposition Leader Jeanne Atherden said.
Ms Atherden said, “Today I would like to wish everyone a very happy National Heroes’ Day.
“Whilst we are watching or taking part in the Parade of Bands in St. David’s or while we are just enjoying some time off to relax or to be with our families, it is important to reflect. We should reflect on the progress that our country has made, the individuals who have helped us to get to where we are and therefore who our heroes include.
“National Heroes’ Day is, to me, about celebrating our National Heroes as well as those individuals who continuously make a difference in our lives, who silently make sacrifices in order to help others and who go the extra mile time and time again. These are people who have no expectation of praise or recognition and are there to support and assist others, come rain or shine.
“I am asking you therefore, as part of your celebration on National Heroes’ Day, to acknowledge and reach out to those persons who are your heroes. We are here today, because of all of the heroes who have gone before and who are also around us now.
“Today I salute all of Bermuda’s heroes.”
Really??????
Yes really. We need to stand strong for bermuda’s culture and we are all heroes.
Sooooo who was the nominated “National Hero” for this year??? I dont get it. Why have a holiday when the main character is MIA?
It’s been established that new heroes don’t have to be named every year. We could probably stop at 10 or 12 and then after several years have passed, consider adding more.
I can find at least 50,000 heros and I am not at the top of the list, those who give and save life are.
if you only knew of all those un sung heroes!
How about all who save lives every day at K.E M.H.
I can name all those dedicated Doctors and Nurses who saved my life 6 years ago.
They are all my and your hero’s also .
The notion of a national heroes day is pretty corny if you ask me and to celebrate it with a foreign custom that nobody really understands is beyond explanation to me.
Ask the BHW committee, they’ll help you understand the “custom”.
Think of it as something equivalent to President’s Day in the US. Or look up National Heroes Days in other countries. Not too corny.
Was there a ceremony honouring National Heroes this year? If so, why wasn’t it promoted? If not, why?
