Donleigh Park Nursery Sign Unveiled
Mayor Charles Gosling, along with members of city council and staff, recently unveiled a sign in Donleigh Park that highlights the process behind trees being grown at the on-site nursery since 2018.
A spokesperson said, “Mayor Charles Gosling and members of the city council and staff officially unveiled an informative sign in Donleigh Park, the newest green space in the City of Hamilton, which has served as a nursery since 2018 for the 20-plus saplings that will eventually find their way to permanent locations around the City.
“After the back-to-back hurricanes in 2014, Fay and Gonzalo, the City-owned dwelling that occupied the space was demolished due to the extensive damage. This paved the way for the tree-growing initiative.”
City Parks Superintendent, Steven De Silva, said of the new tree nursery, “Donleigh Park is the perfect location for these saplings.
“They get adequate light and are protected by the buildings that surround them. The current saplings have had almost two years of growth in this park and I’m proud to announce that we’re ready to transplant our first one to its new home in the City. As one comes out another will go in.”
The spokesperson said, “In recent years, the City has adopted a new planting system that trains the roots of trees to grow steadily downward instead of horizontally.”
“The new system is essential going forward as it reduces root upheaval in our sidewalks. This damage leads to tripping hazards and faults in masonry, not to mention it is costly to fix, so being able to have preventative measures in place is a win-win.”
The spokesperson said, “The newly installed signage in the Park gives an informative outline of the planting process for City trees and the importance of the initiative in Donleigh Park. The park is also designed to be a place of relaxation and respite and the public are encouraged to spend time in this tranquil setting.”
