Photos: Safe Space Bermuda Candlelight Vigil
[Updated with photos] Safe Space Bermuda will be holding a candlelight vigil this evening [June 3] at the T.N. Tatem school field, with the event aimed at bringing awareness to the issue of domestic violence as well as to support the family and friends of Chavelle Dillon-Burgess.
Ms Dillon-Burgess went missing in April, and the police have said her disappearance is “being treated as a suspected case of murder.” A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and was subsequently released on bail.
Organizer Antonio Belvedere told Bernews, “I am putting on a candlelight vigil tonight at T.N. Tatum field at 7.30pm. It is to bring awareness, one for Chavelle, and the main reason is for victims of domestic abuse.”
“We have started a charity called Safe Space Bermuda; I’m one of the founders. We are trying to bring the community together to support victims of domestic abuse, and to bring the community together to support Chavelle’s family and friends through this time.”
“I hope to see you tonight at 7.30pm at T.N. Tatum field. We’re asking people to still bring their masks and there will be social distancing as well.”
Update 10.24pm: Photos from this evening’s event added below
I want to public Thank you Mr.Belvedere for all that you are helping to do alongside our Police Department, in keeping the public aware of the importance of looking for Chavelle Dillion Burgess and at the same time giving hope to many who have and some who still are, suffering Domestic Violence within their homes and to many in secret, Giving these same folk another outlet.
I would urge that the general public support this candle light vigil tonight, and I say to all those 27,000 plus who signed the petition against this man from the U.S coming here, and those who took to the streets outside The U.S. Consulate, please don’t fail to show up and support this candle light vigil tonight, and also to the Group that is organizing the protest at the Police Barricade this coming Sunday, Please show up in full force and I call on the Churches and the Community to do the same.
If you don’t show and support your own but you can take to the streets and wear the slogans, “I CAN’T BREATHE” for something that is happening far from our shores, but you can’t support your own, I say shame on anyone who take that approach, but I support those who will stand for Chavelle Dillion Burgess and her Mother, Her Grandmother and her young Child, and all that are concerned about her well being.
Help this family come to grips with the unknown because of the un-imaginable, Today is her family and Tomorrow could be ours, God forbid, but if we each do our part to step up to the plate, we can and will make a difference. No woman deserves to go through what it is deemed that Chavelle has gone through, and no Parent should have to lay in bed all night wondering about the whereabouts of their child, come out of your comfort Zones Bermuda this evening and give the greatest outpouring of support that can be shown.
To The Bermuda Police Department and Mr Belvedere and all those who have been standing in the gap with Chavelle Dillion Burgess family all these week’s, I publicly say Thank You as Bermudian that don’t even know Chavelle Dillion Burgess, May God Himself reveal her whereabouts.
