Bermuda U/17 Hockey Team Loses 17-0 to Chile
The Bermuda U/17 Girls Hockey team finished off their competition at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championships with a 0-17 loss to Chile on Tuesday March 16.
Bermuda was only down 0-4 at halftime, and had a 15 minute stretch of successfully stopping the Chileans from scoring. The start of the second half saw a period of the Chileans scoring almost every two minutes.
The strong Chilean team had previously bested the massive United States in the tournament.
Placed in Pool B, Bermuda competed against Chile, Uruguay, and the United States. The opening game saw the USA win 11-0, with the second game resulting in Uruguay winning 8-0.
With an estimated Bermuda population of 65,000, the Bermuda team faced teams stemming from countries with populations significantly exceeding ours. According to the World Bank, Chile’s population numbers almost 17 million, United States over 300 million and Uraguay has a population of 3.3 million.
Bermuda will also play two qualification matches on March 18 [against Mexico] and 20th.
The Bermuda team are the youngest team at the tournament, with an average age of under 16 years old. Ten of the team members are Saltus Grammar School students. The team did an outstanding job raising over $50,000 to fund the trip.
The squad consists of:
- Goalkeepers: Latonia Fray, Keisha Harvey
- Utility Players: Ryanne Bardgett, Safiya Nurse
- Midfielders: Christine Decker, Lorina-Le Harvey, Jennifer Chisnall, Iman Smith
- Forwards: Raven Pearman, Alex Francis, Lorendae Symonds, Katie Masters
- Defenders: Jokiah Richardson, Heather Sinclair, Megan Lindsay-Bayley, Rhea Gibbons, Rachel Soares, Zoe Friesen, Emily Chadderton
Coaches Lakae Dill and Valerie Young, Manager Juliette Oatley, and Assistant Manager Stephanie Adderley, accompanied the squad to Uruguay.
The team left Bermuda on March 9th and return to Bermuda on March 23rd.
