Interview: Wife of American Jailed in Bermuda

Former co-accused Jeannie Harden and the wife of an American man jailed in Bermuda suspected in a multi-million dollar drug importation have given an extensive interview to an American paper.

Jeannie Harden, who was accused of importation and jailed before charges were later dropped, also spoke in the interview.

Charleston, South Carolina resident Andrew Blatchley is accused of conspiring to import marijuana into Bermuda between an unknown date and September 23, 2009. Mr. Blatchley is also accused money laundering proceeds from drug trafficking. He was originally charged along with three others including Ms Harden.

The exact amount of cannabis was not revealed, however it is reputed to be in the range of $30 million.

Mr Blatchley’s wife claims she had to fly to Bermuda to deliver money due to difficulty of arranging a wire transfer:

Sandi Blatchley says she flew to Bermuda, bringing with her about $2,000 in cash for the repairs and expenses. Kelley said it’s not unusual for North American sailors to have money delivered since it is often difficult to arrange wire transfers in foreign island banks.

According to the report, the boat was boarded by Police officers in all black carrying machine guns with massive bullets:

A black rubber boat with men fitted all in black, including face masks. They had machine guns with bullets the size of walnuts pointing at us

For any foreigner arrested in Bermuda, the legal system is a difficult process to navigate and absent many of the protections guaranteed in the United States. The island’s constitution applies only to Bermudians

Blatchley’s friends are hoping to organize a campaign to get him freed. Letters have been sent to government officials and Harden has created a page on the social website Facebook
