Streets of St Georges Alive With Tourists

April 30, 2010

The subject of tourism as it relates specifically to St Georges has been a much discussed topic lately. The Old Towne has been hit by the recession with some businesses shutting down in the East End.

The first scheduled Market Nights of the 2010 season was cancelled this week as the town’s first cruise ship of the year, the MS Veendam, had to head straight to Hamilton due to inclement weather.

The Veendam, sailing in from New York, is due to stop in St. George’s on Tuesday mornings before heading to Hamilton on Wednesdays on it’s 24 scheduled calls to Bermuda in 2010.

Bernews went on our own visit to the Old Town yesterday [Apr 29] and it was pleasantly alive with visitors. One couple from Pennsylvania we spoke with said they were off the Veendam and caught the bus from Hamilton.

The hospitality that Bermudians have been renowned for was on full display, with locals happily giving directions to tourists, one local seen explaining the fruit trees in Somers Gardens, as well as another local springing into action with an ear piercing whistle to halt a bus for two visitors rushing  desperately towards it as it took off.

Tourists strolled down the street:
