16th Annual Sand Sculpture Competition

August 15, 2010

Next month Bermuda will welcome back Team Sandtastic from the USA. This team of professional sand sculptors will work their magic with Bermuda’s pink sand to create stunning works of art that will provide buzz and excitement for our visitors and residents. The photo below, courtesy of Team Sandtastic, depicts one of the sand sculptures created by the Florida-based team last year in Bermuda:

Director of Tourism Billy Griffith said, “The Sand Sculpture competition was started 16 years ago by the Institute of Bermuda Architects and spear headed by Mrs. Nicky Gurret. This event has grown in participation and popularity and has proven to be a highly anticipated weekend of fun for our visitors and locals.”

During Sandtastic Days Team Sandtastic will create a unique Bermuda themed, main display using 100 tons of Bermuda’s pink sand at the Fairmont Southampton Beach. Free sand sculpting clinics will also be available in the evenings.

The 16th Annual Bermuda International Sand Sculpture Competition takes place on September 4th at Horseshoe Bay, Southampton and all are invited to enter. This is a free competition and provides an opportunity to win lots of prizes; no experience is necessary. Prizes for amateur sand sculptors include $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.

For more information, please telephone the Department of Tourism at 292-0023 or Nicky Gurret at 295-4597.

I looked at your blog, and your sand sculptures are excellent, very exceptional.

I am not sure if this is open to overseas participants/professionals, and think it may be an amatuer contest. All I can suggest is to try calling the two numbers listed [put a 441 in front for area code] and ask..
