Police: No Gun At Cruise Terminal
Following an incident yesterday [Aug 3] which saw numerous cruise ship passengers delayed as Police searched for a weapon, the Police this morning say they are “satisfied that the presence of a weapon could not be verified” and said they appreciated the cooperation of those who were inconvenienced. The Police also confirmed today that, as we reported yesterday, the suspected weapon in question was a firearm.
Around 2:50pm yesterday Police received information of the presence of a possible weapon at the cruise ship terminal at Penno’s Wharf in St. George’s. The Police say they “took the report of a suspected firearm very seriously and mounted an immediate and significant response involving officers from multiple departments including the Serious Crime Unit, Armed Response Vehicles and the Marine Unit.”
The search resulted in a delay in some passengers being transported back to the Veendam cruise ship by the tender, with dozens of passengers being delayed. The 1,350 passenger capacity Veendam normally stops in St George’s on Tuesdays, and passengers are ferried in and out of the town by a smaller boat, and then moves to dock in Hamilton from Wednesdays – Fridays.
The Police said today that “extensive enquiries were made and the Bermuda Police Service is satisfied that the presence of a weapon could not be verified.” The Police extended their thanks to the public for their cooperation.
Well if they can’t find cannabis at Cup Match when they are surrounded by it, how are they going to find one firearm on a cruise ship.
