Government Update On Tropical Storm
Government has provided an update on Tropical Storm Shary, which they say will make a direct hit at 9.00pm tonight as a weak Tropical Storm. Their full statement follows below:
The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Island. And Bermuda can expect to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Shary as it makes its approach.
According to the BWS and the US National Hurricane Center, Shary will make a direct hit at 9.00 p.m. as a weak Tropical Storm.
Winds are expected to be strongest from the eastern quadrant with Shary bringing tropical storm force winds of up to 40 knots this evening.
Also, it is anticipated that the Island can expect to see periods of heavy rainfall from tonight.
As a safety precaution, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, Dr. Derrick Binns, is advising the public, particularly motorists to use caution when travelling around the Island as the weather system approaches.
Dr. Binns added, “We’re also encouraging cyclists to be extremely cautious when riding on our roads over the next several hours into the evening. Also as a precaution, we are advising all boat owners to secure all boats and other maritime vessels. The public is also encouraged to secure their outdoor furniture, garbage bins or any other items that could be blown about by the wind.”
Meanwhile the Department of Marine and Ports Services advised this afternoon that due to the deteriorating sea conditions associated with the storm that the following ferry routes have been cancelled.
The St. Georges Ferry Service (Orange Route) which would normally leave Hamilton at 2.30 p.m. and 5.20 p.m. respectively have been suspended.
