Cayman: Armed Robbery at Butterfield Bank
Local media in the Cayman Islands is reporting that their branch of The Bank of Butterfield was robbed by two gunmen today [Nov 24]. Reports say that shots were fired, however no one was injured.
Cayman media say that unconfirmed reports indicate that there were two masked robbers and that a teller at the bank had a “close call with one of the shots fired.”
A source told the Caymanian press that although no one was injured, a pregnant woman at the bank was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital.
The Cayman branch of Butterfield Bank has released a statement saying the bank is unable to confirm official details but confirming the incident. The Compass Banking Centre is closed and will remain closed for the remainder of the day, the release said. “We can report our staff and customers are safe and that the Banking Centre is secure. Butterfield management is working with the RCIP and will continue to provide updates as they become available. The safety of our staff and our customers is our number one priority, at this time.”
Butterfield Bank was founded in Bermuda in 1758, later expanding to subsidiary offices in the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, The Bahamas, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
