Squash Tournament: First Day Results
Enthusiasm was the order of the day at the BSRA Squash Club on the first day of the Challenge Tournament between teams from New York, New England, and two teams from Bermuda.
On the first day Bermuda ‘A’ led by Micah Franklin played New England with the local team winning by 7 matches to 4. Three matches in this section were nailbiters, the first between Tony Prentice (Bda) and Richard Von Hirschberg (NE) saw both players battling almost to exhaustion. At 8-8 in the 5th and deciding game it was impossible to predict the outcome, but Prentice then took the last 3 points to take the match. Another close encounter was between Shane McDonnell (Bda) and Elliott Gersten (NE) and they also had spectators on their feet as they went to 5 games with McDonnell taking the decider 11-9, while Richard Brewer (Bda) came from two games down to snatch victory against Peter Cooper (NE).
Micah Franklin was last on court, against New England #1 seed, Thomas Kiedel. Kiedal showed a lot of class, but Franklin had an impressive 3-0 victory to cap the win for Bermuda “A”.
Meanwhile, Bermuda “B”, led by Tommy Sherratt, had a tough encounter against New York. Bearing in mind that this is a “social” tournament, the organizers did a great job in matching players of similar standards against each other, and none more so than the matches between Donnavon Furbert (Bda) and Sergei Parmenov (NY), and Anthony Fellowes (Bda) and Harrison Sebring (NY). Both of these matches went to 5 games, with Furbert winning the decider 11-9 for the home team, while Sebring defeated Fellowes by the same winning margin (11-9) to record a win for New York. Michael Malinowitz (NY) also won his match against Tony Sampson 3-2.
Tommy Sherratt scored a convincing win against New York #1 seed, David Uprichard who ran the New York marathon last week but showed that he is superfit as he chased every ball around the court even though he was outclassed by Sherratt.
At the end of the evening Bermuda “B” held a slender one point lead against New York with one match to be played on Friday due to the late arrival of one of the New York players.
Summing up the visitors’ feelings at the end of the first day, Brett Erasmus, a former Bermuda resident and leading organizer of the U.S. Teams said, “This is a truly wonderful tournament. Everyone enjoys the Bermudian hospitality and I know our players are having the time of their lives, whether we win or lose.”
