Tropical Storm Tomas A Potential Threat

November 4, 2010

The Bermuda Weather Service says that “the forecast track of Tropical Storm Tomas, now a potential threat, is being closely monitored.” They say the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs [3 days] is forecast to be 353
nautical miles to the SSW, at 5pm on Sunday November 7th.

Tomas was churning across the Caribbean, with maximum sustained winds of 85km/h [50mph], the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Image below courtesy of the BWS:

A hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning were in effect for Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Jamaica. The storm already lashed Barbados and killed over a dozen people in Saint Lucia.

Earthquake-devastated Haiti is bracing for Tropical Storm Tomas to hit tomorrow [Nov 5], threatening earthquake survivors still living in camps. Health workers fear heavy rain will exacerbate Haiti’s cholera epidemic.

The US Navy is on the way to Haiti prepared to assist the already-devasted island nation following the storm. A crew of 1,600 military and civilian medical, engineering, aviation, logistical and other support personnel are embarked aboard Iwo Jima Naval Ship, including U.S. Navy engineers, a contingent of 500 Marines with logistical-support expertise, volunteers from the U.S. Public Health Service and various non-governmental organizations, as well as medical, dental and engineering professionals from Europe, North America and South America.
