Boats Break Free During Stormy Weather

December 22, 2010

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre reported cases of boats breaking free from their moorings amidst the stormy weather yesterday [Dec 21], which saw the island hit by winds with gusts up to a reported 60 knots.

At 8:46am Bermuda radio received a report of a boat adrift near the south side of Whites Island in Hamilton Harbour. Officials say that “Due to poor weather conditions pleasure craft ‘Yobbo’ ran aground on the eastern end of Whites Island. The vessel was later recovered by Marine Police, with assistance from a M&P vessel, and safely re secured to its mooring.”

At 9:25am Bermuda radio received another report of a boat adrift, this time in the vicinity of Smiths Island, St Georges. Officials say “The boat had broken away from its mooring and was drifting out to sea via old town cut. Bermuda Yacht Services vessel ‘Line 1’ and vessel ‘Albatross’ provided assistance and towed the vessel safely back into St Georges harbour.”

At 6:20pm a report was received that the 36ft powercraft ‘Masquerade’ had broken free from its moorings and beached in Jews Bay. Bermuda radio contacted the vessels owner who recovered the vessel and re secured it to moorings.

Update Dec 23: According to a call we received, the 9:25am call actually occurred far differently. Our caller said the incident happened at 6:20am, and it was the ‘Albatross’ that broke lose, and Bermuda Yacht Services were not involved, and the boat was brought back in by another gentleman.
