Sick Cruise Passenger Transferred To Bermuda
A passenger in need of urgent medical care was transferred from ‘Celebrity Apex’ to a pilot boat off Bermuda and taken to hospital.
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre [BMOC] spokesperson said, “Sunday, 9th March, 1:00 pm. RCC Bermuda received a telephone call from the USCG RCC Norfolk, and was conferenced with the cruise ship Celebrity Apex into the call, the ship was in a position 230 miles east of Florida enroute to Bermuda for her scheduled call to Dockyard on Tuesday morning. The medical team onboard the cruise ship advised they had a patient onboard in need of urgent medical assistance ashore, and the options of disembarking the patient were discussed.
“RCC Bermuda coordinated with the emergency department at King Edward Memorial Hospital Bermuda, United States Coast Guard, Bermuda Pilots and local shipping agents to arrange disembarking the patient via the Pilot Boat St George at the Sea Buoy, located at the Eastern End of Bermuda.
“The ship increased speed, and the transfer took place offshore at approximately 3:00 am on Tuesday morning, the patient was then safely transferred to an ambulance waiting at Ordnance Island in St Georges. The ship remained offshore and subsequently embarked a pilot at first light to transit to Heritage Wharf, Dockyard as per her scheduled visit.”
